How to Take a Professional LinkedIn Headshot Without a Photographer

Learn how to take a professional LinkedIn headshot without a photographer. Step-by-step advice for DIY, AI tools, and career success.

How to Take a Professional LinkedIn Headshot Without a Photographer

Picture this: You’re prepping for an interview that could finally get you out of that junior position. You know your skills stack up, but your LinkedIn photo? A semi-blurry selfie from your friend’s wedding. The truth is, how to take a professional LinkedIn headshot without a photographer is a question almost everyone faces and most people get completely wrong.

Why Your LinkedIn Headshot Matters (More Than You Think)

Before anyone reads your summary, or even your headline, they’re judging your photo. Recruiters, clients, future leaders: they all notice.

Especially on LinkedIn, a quality headshot signals you take your career seriously. It’s not just about looking "nice." It’s about matching the level of professionalism you claim everywhere else. Think of it as your personal brand’s first impression; would you show up to a pitch in sweatpants? Same thing here.

DIY Professional Headshots: What Actually Works

First, let’s kill a myth: You do not need a $2,000 DSLR or a fancy backdrop. Most modern smartphones are good enough. The trick? Controlling what you can like the lighting, composition, and, yes, what you wear. Here are a few helpful tips:

Honestly, I’ve seen brilliant engineers torpedo their credibility with a messy, dimly lit photo. Don’t be that person.

The Step-by-Step Framework: Nailing Your Solo Shoot

1. Prep Your Look (10 Minutes)

Pick your outfit. Simple grooming: hair, glasses, quick face wash. No need for a makeup artist, but a lint roller never hurts.

2. Set Up Your Space (5 Minutes)

Grab a chair and place it two feet from a blank wall. Position yourself facing a window with diffused natural light. Turn off overhead lights if they create weird shadows.

3. Phone Setup (5 Minutes)

Use your phone’s rear camera (better quality), prop it up with books, and use the timer mode or a Bluetooth clicker. Clean the lens of smudges.

4. Strike a Few Poses (10 Minutes)

Take 20-30 shots. Experiment a little... slight smiles, relaxed jaw, eyes at the camera. Try subtle angles: straight on, then a slight turn. Most people look more approachable with a gentle head tilt, not a forced grin.

5. Review and Edit (10 Minutes)

Pick 2-3 of your favorites. Use your phone’s built-in editor: adjust brightness, crop to shoulders up, tweak contrast. Skip heavy filters. If you really want polish, upload to an AI service that can enhance lighting and background (this is where Bettershot.ai shines, especially for removing that ugly apartment door behind you).

Bad vs. Good LinkedIn Headshots: Real-World Examples

Most DIY headshots fall into the “just okay” bucket.

While most studio headshots are too stiff. The sweet spot is looking like yourself, but on your best day, not a mannequin. This is exactly where tools like Bettershot can help. AI-generated headshots tweak lighting, posture, and background without losing your personality. You get that professional edge, minus the stress or awkwardness of a studio session.

AI Headshots: The New Standard for LinkedIn and Beyond

Why are AI-generated headshots exploding in popularity? Simple yet most people hate having their picture taken. With AI, you upload a few selfies, and in minutes you get dozens of options that look polished, consistent, and importantly, not fake.

Platforms like Bettershot are a gift for the camera-shy, the time-strapped, or anyone who needs an upgrade now. You don’t have to coordinate outfits, book a photographer, or awkwardly pose in public parks. Plus, you can instantly match the style across all your career assets.

As someone who’s been in enough hiring meetings, let me say: a headshot that’s crisp, modern, and consistent across platforms quietly signals “I’m detail-oriented and current.” That’s a competitive advantage that costs less than a nice shirt.

Consistency is Key: Portfolios, Resumes, and Personal Sites

Here’s the part most people miss: Your headshot isn’t just for LinkedIn. Employers and clients will check your portfolio, your resume, maybe even your website. If your photo changes across platforms, different backgrounds, different outfits, it looks sloppy. Worst-case scenario: it makes people question which version is “real.”

I strongly recommend using one professional, up-to-date headshot everywhere. AI tools like Bettershot make this painless: upload once, get a set of consistent, high-res images for every platform. No more mismatched Zoom icons or outdated About pages. One photo, many uses—a subtle but powerful upgrade to your personal brand.

Final Tips for Confidence (Even If You Hate Photos)

Not everyone loves the camera, but “I’m just not photogenic” is a myth.

Try Bettershot and see how easy a professional headshot can be without the awkward studio session.

Why a Professional Headshot Matters for Your LinkedIn Profile Success

Why a Professional Headshot Matters for Your LinkedIn Profile Success

Discover why a professional headshot is crucial for your LinkedIn profile and career growth. Learn tips, comparisons, and how Bettershot.ai helps.

Why a Professional Headshot Matters for Your LinkedIn Profile Success

Imagine walking into an interview, coffee in hand, and the interviewer already has a clear image of you thanks to your LinkedIn profile. In today’s hyper-competitive job market, a professional headshot isn't just a nice-to-have; it's a strategic asset that can directly influence career opportunities, promotions, and client trust.

The First Impression: Your Professional Headshot

First impressions happen fast, often in less than a second online. Your headshot is not just a photo; it’s the first storytelling device for your personal brand. It conveys trustworthiness, competence, and personality without a single word.

Here’s the tricky part: most professionals overlook how much their headshot impacts recruiter and client perceptions. A blurry, outdated, or poorly lit photo sends weak signals. Conversely, a polished headshot sets a confident tone, increasing profile views and connections. It’s like showing up to a networking event in a crisp, tailored suit instead of wrinkled casuals.

Step-by-Step: Crafting the Ideal Professional Headshot for LinkedIn

Creating a standout headshot might seem straightforward, but nailing it requires intention. Here's a practical checklist to get it right:

  1. Choose Your Outfit Wisely: Opt for solid colors that complement your skin tone. Avoid busy patterns that distract.
  2. Lighting Matters: Natural, diffused light is your friend. Avoid harsh shadows or overexposure.
  3. Background Simplicity: A clean, uncluttered background keeps the focus on you.
  4. Expression and Posture: Aim for approachable confidence, a slight smile, relaxed shoulders.
  5. Resolution and Crop: Use a high-resolution image cropped to frame your head and shoulders naturally.

For many, DIY attempts fall short here, especially when juggling lighting and framing. That’s where services like Bettershot shine. Leveraging AI to generate consistently professional results from your existing photos, saving time and money without a studio session.

Bad vs. Good: What Separates an Amateur Headshot from a Professional One

Most people get this wrong by either over-editing or settling for snapshots. Here's a quick comparison:

  • Bad Headshot: Pixelated photo, cluttered background, awkward angle, over-smiling or stiff expression, inconsistent lighting.
  • Good Professional Headshot: Crisp focus, neutral or branded background, natural lighting, confident yet approachable expression, well-framed.

For example, consider Sarah, a junior PM who uploaded a selfie taken in a car. Her profile views were stagnant. After switching to a professional headshot generated by Bettershot.ai, her profile visits doubled within weeks. The difference? Credibility and approachability in a glance.

Consistency Is Key: Using Your Headshot Across LinkedIn, Resumes, and Portfolios

Here’s a hot take: your headshot should be the same or visually consistent across all career assets. Why? Because consistency builds trust and brand recognition. Recruiters appreciate it, and it makes your personal brand feel coherent.

Imagine a hiring manager who sees one photo on LinkedIn, another on your resume, and a third on your portfolio website. This disconnect can feel off-putting and unprofessional. Bettershot.ai helps maintain this consistency effortlessly by generating versatile images tailored for each platform.

Leveraging AI: How Bettershot.ai Transforms Your Professional Headshot Experience

The traditional route to a professional headshot can be costly and time-consuming, think studio fees, scheduling, and retakes. Bettershot.ai flips the script by using AI to craft polished, natural-looking headshots from just a few user photos.

This approach doesn’t just save money; it democratizes professional branding. Bettershot.ai excels especially for camera-shy individuals who freeze up in front of a lens but can submit casual shots and get a polished, confident image in return.

Plus, AI-generated headshots ensure consistent lighting, posture, and background style, creating a unified visual presence across LinkedIn, resumes, and personal websites. If you want to stay ahead in your career, integrating this technology is no longer optional, it's smart.

In short, your professional headshot is more than an image; it’s a career catalyst. Treat it as an investment, not an afterthought.

Conclusion

  • Your professional headshot is important, make it count.
  • Follow a clear, intentional process to create a headshot that speaks professionalism and approachability.
  • Don’t underestimate the power of consistency across LinkedIn, resumes, and portfolios.
  • Bad headshots can do more harm than good; invest in quality, whether DIY with care or AI-assisted.
  • Bettershot offers a practical, cost-effective solution for sharp, uniform headshots, especially if studio sessions aren’t an option.

Ready to upgrade your LinkedIn presence and career potential? Try Bettershot today and see how a professional headshot can open doors you didn’t even know existed.

How to Nail Your Professional Headshot for LinkedIn and Resumes

How to Nail Your Professional Headshot for LinkedIn and Resumes

Learn how to create a standout professional headshot for LinkedIn and resumes using expert tips and Bettershot.ai's AI-powered service.

How to Nail Your Professional Headshot for LinkedIn and Resumes

Imagine you’re a junior in your field, walking into your first big interview. You’ve got the skills, the experience, but your LinkedIn profile picture looks like it was taken in poor lighting on a weekend hike. A professional headshot is the first impression that can make or break a recruiter’s interest. This is why mastering your professional headshot is crucial for career advancement.

Why Your Professional Headshot Matters More Than You Think

Most people underestimate the power of a solid professional headshot. It’s not about vanity, it’s about trust, credibility, and signaling seriousness. When a recruiter skims hundreds of resumes, your photo can subtly influence whether they remember you or skip ahead.

Here’s the tricky part: it’s not only about looking good but fitting the expectations of your industry and role. A startup founder’s headshot will naturally differ from a corporate lawyer’s. Getting this balance right shows you understand professional norms and that you mean business.

Step-by-Step Framework for a Winning Professional Headshot

To avoid the endless trial-and-error of selfies or awkward photos, follow this tailored framework. It’s what seasoned professionals use to create consistency and impact across platforms:

This checklist isn’t theoretical; it’s proven. Bettershot.ai, for example, leverages AI to adjust lighting and expression nuances, helping those who aren’t camera-savvy look effortlessly polished.

Bad vs. Good: Real Examples of Professional Headshots on LinkedIn

A lot of folks have no idea how much their LinkedIn photo is holding them back. Scroll for 30 seconds and you’ll see it: blurry crops, awkward lighting, random vacation shots pretending to be “professional.” A bad photo quietly kills credibility. A great one signals “this person has their shit together.”

Let’s look at real examples so you can spot the difference instantly.

Example of a good LinkedIn headshot photo (good lighting, clean background, professional outfit)
Example of a bad LinkedIn photo (too close-up, poor lighting)

Integrating Your Headshot Seamlessly Across LinkedIn, Resumes, and Portfolios

Consistency is often overlooked. Using different photos on your LinkedIn, resume, and portfolio website confuses recruiters—or worse, makes you appear careless.

Thankfully, AI-powered tools like Bettershot simplify this by generating multiple versions of your professional headshot optimized for various platforms. One photo fits all? Rarely. The LinkedIn crop is square, resumes often call for a smaller format, and on personal sites, you might want a more casual vibe.

By controlling the style and format centrally, you maintain a coherent personal brand. This is especially valuable when you’re applying for multiple roles simultaneously or building a portfolio that needs to impress diverse audiences.

Why Bettershot Beats DIY and Studio Photos for Busy Professionals

Traditional studio headshots, while high quality, are often overkill, and costlty for most career needs. DIY photos tend to waste time and frustrate those who aren’t comfortable in front of a camera. Bettershot hits the sweet spot.

Firstly, it’s fast. Instead of booking appointments, traveling, and enduring multiple retakes, you upload a few selfies and let AI handle the rest. The result? A professional headshot that looks like it came from a studio session but without the hassle.

Secondly, it’s cost-effective. Professional photographers can charge hundreds per session, often limiting you to one or two looks. Bettershot lets you experiment with expressions, lighting, and backgrounds without additional fees.

Lastly, it’s empowering for camera-shy pros. If you dread photos but know the value of a polished headshot, this service helps you overcome that barrier with subtle enhancements that feel natural, not overly retouched.

In short, Bettershot isn’t just tech for tech’s sake, it’s a practical tool designed to get you career-ready headshots that work hard for you.

A Practical Guide to Lawyer Headshots
3 min read

A Practical Guide to Lawyer Headshots

This practical guide breaks down everything lawyers need to know about getting a professional headshot like where to what to wear, where to find the best discounts on headshots & more!

A Practical Guide to Lawyer Headshots

Most lawyer headshots are either outdated, over-posed, or just plain awkward. But when you work in a field built on trust, your photo matters. A lot.

This guide breaks down what makes a strong lawyer headshot, where you'll actually use it, how much you should budget, and how to get one without spending hours in a studio.

Why bother with a headshot?

Your headshot is the first thing people see likely ahead of your credentials, bio, and most likely well before they decide to book a consultation.

A good headshot helps you:

  • Look credible and approachable
  • Build trust with potential clients
  • Stand out from other attorneys in the same practice area

What to wear in a lawyer headshot

No surprises here—dress like you're going to court or meeting with a high-stakes client.

Here’s what we've found actually works:

  • A dark blazer or suit, button-down shirt, and an optional tie
  • Or, a blouse or dress, clean lines, minimal jewelry

Ultimately, keep it simple. No loud prints, patterns or messy backdrops. You want people to remember you, not your outfit or that weird thing on the wall... I guess, it's art?

Where lawyers use headshots

This isn’t just for your firm’s “Our Team” page. You’ll probably use your headshot more than you think.

Here’s where it shows up:

  • Your firm’s website
  • LinkedIn or other networking platforms
  • Legal directories like Avvo or Martindale
  • Speaking gigs, webinars, or CLE bios
  • Media quotes or press appearances
  • Your email signature

If it’s even remotely client-facing, a polished headshot goes a long way.

How much should a lawyer headshot cost?

Professional headshots usually fall somewhere between $150 and $500, depending on how fancy you want to get.

Typical breakdown:

  • Session fee: $100–$300
  • Retouched images: $25–$75 per photo
  • Outfit/background changes: Sometimes extra

If that feels like too much (or you just don’t have the time), you’ve got options. AI tools like Bettershot can generate dozens of clean, professional headshots from photos you already have—for less than the cost of your next lunch-and-learn.

Looking for a quick cost comparison across different states? We've got you.

Is it worth hiring a photographer or make the trek to a studio?

If you're a managing partner or frequently featured in the press—sure, go for it. A studio shoot gives you control and flexibility, and you’ll walk away with a few great shots.

But if you:

  • Just need a professional photo for your website or LinkedIn
  • Don’t want to block an afternoon for a photo session
  • Want to update your headshot without the hassle

...then something faster and more affordable (like AI-generated headshots) might make more sense.

At the end of the day, the goal is the same: look polished, credible, and like someone people would want to trust with their legal matters.

Example headshots for lawyers

Here’s what works well:

  • Clean, neutral background (gray, beige, light office setting)
  • Natural expression (slight smile or relaxed face)
  • Professional outfit, well-lit, and cropped chest-up

The vibe? Confident but approachable. Think “I’ve got this” energy, not “cross-examination at dawn.”

Need some inspo? Check out these AI generated headshots!

So, what next?

Your headshot doesn’t need to be complicated. It just needs to work.

A clean, professional photo helps you build trust before a single word is spoken. And with tools like Bettershot, it’s easier than ever to look like the real deal—without booking a studio, hiring a makeup artist, or digging your only suit out of storage.

Canva’s AI Headshot Generator: A Deeper Dive Review

Canva’s AI Headshot Generator: A Deeper Dive Review

We tried Canva’s new AI headshot feature—here’s what we learned (and how it compares to other tools).

Canva’s AI Headshot Generator: A Deeper Dive Review

Canva’s been one of our team’s go-to platforms.

Whether we need to design a few ads, or update a pitch deck, it’s a staple.

But recently, Canva’s expanded their suite of AI tools to include something we had to try for ourselves: AI-generated headshots.

Naturally, we had to try it.

From Design Templates to AI Headshots

For the past couple of years Canva’s been rolling out AI features as part of its Magic Studio—Magic Write, Magic Design, and now, Magic Headshots.

It’s kind of like Bettershot, Canva gives Pro Plan users the ability to quickly whip up a single image headshot based on prompts.

Bettershot however offers a variety of headshot styles tailored to different professions and needs, like LinkedIn and students headshots, or headshots specifically for military personnellawyers, and corporate teams.

Our Honest Take on Canva’s Headshots

Look, we love Canva!

But when it comes to AI-generated headshots, we were pretty underwhelmed.

Our headshot turned out overly airbrushed and clearly "AI-y." The result felt disconnected from the original photos we uploaded. Facial features were off. The skin looked plastic. And just lacked any realism.

Kind of felt like a classic case of 'you get what you pay for'.

On the upside, getting access to their headshot generator was included in our Canva Pro plan—but we only got one output. No batch of photos. Very little control over background and outfit. Plus, the final results turned out more like a cartoon unfortunately.

See the Results for Yourself

What Canva’s AI Headshot Generator Gets Right

Not to say it was all bad, there were some really cool things we did like:

  • Ease of use: If you’re already familiar with Canva, the headshot tool is super intuitive. Upload, click, done.

  • Speed: It was fast. We got results in a few seconds.

Other Reviews: Not Bad, Not Great

We’re not the only ones who gave Canva’s AI headshot tool a try. Reviews across the web are mixed.

Some users found it decent for casual use  like Jennie Lakenan in her review

So while Canva’s tool might work in a pinch, it’s probably not what you want as your digital first impression.

Final Verdict

If you're already using Canva and want to experiment, their headshot generator is worth a shot. But if you’re looking for a realistic, professional, and versatile headshot, this isn’t it.

Want Something Better?

‍The Essential Guide to Military Portraits

This guide covers everything you need to know about military portraits without spending hundreds or dealing with an all-day photoshoot

The Essential Guide to Military Portraits

Military portraits are trending towards being a non-negotiable in 2025, whether you're active duty or not.

With that in mind, we wrote this with the goal of having it be an essential guide for folks needing to know what makes a good headshot vs. some of the less than desirable portraits we've seen over the years.

TLDR: if you're active duty, veteran or even a spouse of someone who's been in the military, there's a special discount code for 30% off headshots.

What Makes a Great Military Portrait?

Before we get into the technical stuff, first and foremost your photo should look and "feel" like you.

Skip the filters, exaggerated expressions, or awkward head tilt. Just be natural.

That aside, stick to these general guidelines:

Lighting: watch the lighting—stick to to natural or soft studio lighting. Either way, make sure you do play around with different lighting to keep your photo from turning out too dark. Just check out the two photos below: the photo on the left has a poor lighting vs. the photo on the right.

Expression: Smiling to the camera might not come natural for you. We get it, it can feel awkward. You don't have to try too hard, just aim for approachable. If you're not sure what we mean, take a look at the two photos below. Which of these seem more approachable to you?

Why Do You Even Need a Headshot?

  • AMCAS Headshots: From what we found on Google, you probably don't need a specific 'AMCAS' headshot per se. Medical school applications rarely require a headshot, but some secondary applications or specific programs might ask for one.
  • ERAS Headshots: On the flip side, ERAS headshots seems 100% required. Residency applications without a headshot are deemed 'incomplete', and program directors will see it when reviewing your application.

What About Sizing and Formatting?

  • AMCAS Headshots: No strict rules since they’re not really a thing for most applications.
  • ERAS Headshots: Super specific requirements:
    • Size: 2.5 x 3.5 inches
    • Resolution: 150 dpi
    • File Size: Max 150 KB
    • Format: JPEG
If it doesn’t meet these, it won’t upload properly

How Professional Does It Really Need to Be?

  • AMCAS Headshots: If you include one, it should look professional, but there’s no strict dress code.
  • ERAS Headshots: Think what looks best on LinkedIn —a bit more formal attire, clean background (white, gray, or light blue), and a polished, confident look.

Does Your Headshot Actually Matter?

  • AMCAS: Not really. If included, it won’t make or break your application.
  • ERAS: Yes! It’s the first impression residency programs get of you, so a sloppy or unprofessional headshot could work against you.

Do You Really Need a Suit or Dress for an AMCAS Headshot?

  • Short answer: Nope.
  • Long answer: Since AMCAS doesn’t even require a headshot, there’s no strict dress code. But if you’re submitting one, you should still look professional—business casual at a minimum. A nice button-down, blouse, or blazer is totally fine. No need for a full suit unless you want to go the extra mile. Just avoid anything too casual (no hoodies, T-shirts, or party photos).

Need a headshot for ERAS or AMCAS?

AI can generate studio-quality headshot photos, and they’re actually really good.

Professional Headshot Sizes Guide: Perfect Dimensions for Social Media & Print

This guide breaks down exactly what size you need your headshot to be for social media and print

Everything You Need to Know Headshot Sizes

Ever notice how some headshots look crisp and professional on every platform, while others end up blurry, stretched, or awkwardly cropped? The difference often comes down to one crucial detail: size.

Use the wrong dimensions, and that polished photo you invested in could end up looking amateur.

This guide breaks down exactly what size you need, where you need it, and how to make sure your headshot maintains its impact everywhere it appears.

Size Matters (And Here's Why)

Different platforms have different size requirements, you’ll want to bookmark this section and come back to it whenever you’re about to post a headshot to LinkedIn, X, Instagram or Facebook.

Headshot sizes by platform

  • LinkedIn: 400×400px (The holy grail of professional networking)
  • X: 400×400px minimum (Because your hot takes deserve a sharp avatar)
  • Instagram: 320×320px (Keep it clean, keep it crisp)
  • Facebook: 400×400px (Yes, it still matters)

Headshot sizes for the ‘Print Purists’

  • Standard Headshot: 8×10 inches at 300 DPI
  • Digital High-Res: 1500×2100px (Future-proof your image game)

Headshot Sizing on Autopilot

The Bettershot Difference

Meet Rachelle, Bettershot's Co-founder.

"The biggest mistake I see? People taking amazing photos but destroying them with wrong sizing," she explains from her minimalist home office. "Someone will take a perfect headshot, then crush it down to tiny pixels for LinkedIn, or try to stretch a small photo into a giant banner. That’s why we built our AI to automatically optimize every headshot for different platforms – from LinkedIn’s 400x400 sweet spot to the high-res versions you need for speaking engagements. No more guesswork, no more pixelation."

The Secret Sauce: How to Nail Your Headshot

The Good

  • Meet Calvin White, VP of Sales at Vault Credit:
Before: An old black-and-white photo from a business retreat back in 2019
After: Navy blazer, slight head tilt, subtle smirk – got new headshots for his whole team because it was too easy not to.

  • LinkedIn: Subtle authority (think: "I could buy your company, but I’m cool")
  • X: Approachable expert (the "I post wisdom between closing deals" look)
  • Instagram: Creative edge (because even professionals can be interesting)

A couple more tips

  • Update your headshots often, now that you can (stay fresh, stay relevant)

Types of Maternity Photoshoots

When it comes to planning your shoot, how you style the shoot will play a huge part in how your photos turn out.

Silhouettes, outdoor sessions, and in-studio are the most popular styles we came across.

Silhouette Maternity Photoshoots

Silhouettes can do a great job at highlighting your baby bump profile against a bright background, creating a more “artistic” style.

Why it works:

  • Silhouettes emphasize the shape of your belly, making for timeless and artistic shots.
  • They offer a beautiful option for moms who may feel self-conscious but still want to document their journey.

Outdoor Maternity Photoshoots

Nature can make the perfect backdrop for maternity photos, symbolizing new life and growth.

Why it works:

  • Natural settings like flowery fields, forests, or lakesides create a serene and organic aesthetic
  • The season can add meaningful context—think spring blossoms, autumn leaves, or winter snowflakes
(Photo courtesy of White Elm Photography)

In-Studio Maternity Photoshoots

If you’re for that classic, high-fashion maternity shot, an in-studio shoot offers perfect lighting and a private setting.

Why it works:

  • Studio shoots eliminate weather concerns and allow for precise lighting control.
  • They’re ideal for bold concepts, like flowing fabric drapes or black-and-white editorial-style images.

Types of Beach Photoshoots

What separates amateur beach shots from the ones that make people stop scrolling: timing. If there’s any advice we found that just kept coming up in our research was playing with natural light against your beach backdrop.

Golden Hour

Golden hour—the last hour before sunset and the first hour after sunrise—is pure magic. The warm, soft light adds a dreamy glow, making every shot look naturally stunning.

Why it works: The sun sits low on the horizon, casting a warm, flattering light that makes everyone look their best without harsh shadows. Skin glows, the sand turns honey-colored, and the ocean often reflects those gorgeous orange and pink tones. No filter needed!

Blue Hour

Equally stunning is blue hour. For the science fans: this happens when red light passes straight through space while blue light scatters in our atmosphere before reaching Earth.

Blue hour offers a more mellow, moody vibe. This brief period (usually 20–96 minutes after sunset or before sunrise) casts a cool, blue light over the scene. The result? Calm, almost ethereal photos that speak volumes with minimal effort.

Pro tip: Blue hour requires longer exposure times, so bring a tripod or something to stabilize your camera/phone.

How Much Does a Beach Photoshoot Cost in 2025?

Traditionally, hiring a photographer for a beach session can set you back anywhere from $500 to $1,000.

Why My Therapist Girlfriend Chose a Professional Photographer Over AI Headshots

Why My Therapist Girlfriend Chose a Professional Photographer Over AI Headshots

Just because you're building something you love, doesn't mean everyone's going to want to try it. Enter—my therapist girlfriend and her headshots.

Hey, I'm Rachelle! I'm one of the co-founders of Bettershot.

I wanted to share a little story about my therapist girlfriend and her feelings about AI headshots.

****

My girlfriend’s a therapist. While she was in  school, I was building Bettershot.

She watched me work on it, tweak it, and turn it into the fastest, easiest way to get professional headshots. Naturally, when she needed one for her website, I figured she'd use Bettershot.

She didn't.

Instead, she booked a professional photographer.

I was like—excuse me?

So, I asked her why. Here’s our conversation (paraphrasing)

Me: Why did you go with a photographer instead of using Bettershot?

Her: Because I wanted my headshots to feel like me. Not just polished, but warm, inviting—like someone you’d want to open up to. I worried AI might smooth things over too much, make me look too corporate, or just... not quite real.

Me: But isn’t the whole point of Bettershot that it makes you look like the best version of yourself?

Her: Yes, but as a therapist, the ‘best version’ isn’t just looking put-together. It’s about trust. Connection. I needed something that captured my energy, my personality—the little micro-expressions that make someone feel safe enough to share their story.

Me: Okay, fair. But not everyone has the time or budget for a full photoshoot. What would you say to therapists who can’t afford a photographer?

Her: I’d say they should still prioritize an image that feels human. AI headshots can absolutely work, but they need to feel natural. No stiff, overly airbrushed, or “techy” vibes. If I were using AI, I’d want to make sure the photos had warmth, authenticity, and maybe a few different styles to test what feels most like me.

Me: So, if a therapist were using Bettershot, what would make an AI headshot work for them?

Her: Three things:

  1. Soft lighting and neutral colors. Avoid anything too high-contrast or moody. You want warmth, not drama.
  2. Natural expressions. If you look too serious or too posed, people might feel intimidated. A soft smile works wonders.
  3. Clothing that reflects your practice. If your therapy style is relaxed and conversational, don’t wear a blazer unless you normally do. Wear what makes you feel comfortable, because that’s how your clients will see you.

Me: So, basically, therapists can use AI headshots, but they have to be intentional about the vibe?

Her: Exactly. Your headshot is often the first thing a potential client sees. It’s not just about looking good—it’s about making people feel safe enough to reach out.

I was playing around with Bettershot, working on new styles to add. I asked my girlfriend again, "Can I create a headshot for you? One that feels more playful and fun?"

This time she was up for it (probably because she was tired of hearing me beg, lol)

So I ended up creating these—but, I must have freaking nailed it because she actually ended up liking them!

So, Should Therapists Use AI Headshots?

Look, I get it—sometimes you just need a great headshot without the hassle of a photoshoot. And that's where Bettershot can help.

But if you’re a therapist, you need to be thoughtful. Make sure your headshots convey the warmth, trust, and approachability that your clients need to feel before they even book a session. Whether that’s with a professional photographer or AI, the goal remains the same: be the person they feel safe opening up to.And if you're going with AI?

Choose your photos wisely. The best headshot isn't just about looking professional—it’s about looking like you.

How to Create an Edgy Headshot That Still Looks Professional

How to Create an Edgy Headshot That Still Looks Professional

Most professional headshots are forgettable. But, they don't have to be. Here's your guide to taking edgy, standout headshots.

How to Create an Edgy Headshot That Still Looks Professional

Most professional headshots are forgettable. It’s usually always a stiff smile accompanied by that look in their eyes that says "I had to do this”. But your headshot doesn't have to suck. Here's how to create an edgy headshot that actually shows who you are (while still keeping it professional).

What Makes an Edgy Headshot Worth Looking At?

Think about the last time you saw a headshot that made you stop scrolling. Chances are it wasn't another blue-backdrop boardroom shot. The best edgy headshots combine these key elements:

  • Genuine expression (not the frozen "please take the picture" smile)
  • Interesting but not distracting background
  • Natural pose that shows confidence
  • Lighting that flatters but still looks real
  • Style that matches your actual personality

Real People, Real Edgy Headshots

Take a look at how others are breaking the corporate headshot mold.Meet Bettershot's co-founder, Rachelle. She decided 'enough was enough' when it came to having long locks so they shaved it off. Not saying everyone should shave off their hair, but the mix of the hairstyle and coffee shop vibes adds a little extra edge, wouldn't you say?

Here's another example we love. This Bettershot user chose to leave her septum ring in and chose an urban cityscape as her background. Professional? Yes. Edgy? Yes. See? Both can exist without being too boring or overly corporate.

Should You Go for an Edgy Headshot?

Quick way to decide: Look at the LinkedIn profiles of people you admire in your industry. If everyone's rocking traditional corporate shots, maybe stick closer to that vibe. But if you're seeing variety, here's worth considering:

  • You work in tech, startups, or creative fields
  • You're building a personal brand
  • You're job hunting in forward-thinking companies
  • You regularly speak at events or run workshops
  • You're in sales or business development where standing out helps

Where an Edgy Headshot Might Not Make Sense

  • Your company has strict photo guidelines
  • You work in ultra-traditional industries (financial services, banking, law)
  • Your clients expect very conservative presentation (likely the industries above)

Do's and Don't's:

Do:

  • Wear something you'd actually wear to work (not just for photos)
  • Take photos at different times of day for better lighting options
  • Try a few different expressions—smiling, laughing, closed mouth
  • Include some shots where you're slightly moving
  • Take photos in places you actually spend time so you feel comfortable

Dont's:

  • Do weird stuff with filters (look natural)
  • Try too hard to look "professional"
  • Use distracting background

Make Your Edgy Headshot Happen: Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Prep Work
    • Pick 2-3 outfits you feel confident in.
    • Find a couple of simple backgrounds.
    • Check your camera lens is clean.
  2. The Actual Session:
    • Take 20-30 shots minimum
    • Mix up your poses and expressions
    • Try both indoor and outdoor lighting
    • Get some shots while talking or laughing

We Tried the Top 3 Ranked AI Headshot Generators in 2025 (According to Google)

We tried these top 3 AI headshot generators in 2025 so you don't have to. Read reviews, see examples, and more!

If you've ever needed a new headshot, you've probably seen an ad on Instagram or TikTok for AI headshot generators. You may have thought, ‘what the heck is that’ so you head to Google to do a search.

Since 2023, AI headshot generator apps have been popping up, promising studio-quality headshots in minutes.

But which of them actually delivers what they advertise?

We decided to test the top ranked AI headshot generators according to Google—HeadshotPro, Aragon, and Canva—to find out which is worth your time (and money). Scroll on to see full reviews, videos and examples from each platform.

Let's dig in 🔥

How It Started

Wait, before we dig into the results, we should probably level set by showing you the original photos we uploaded to each platform. For Canva, they only require one image, so the image we have highlighted in red is the one we chose.

The Contenders (according to Google search results)

1. HeadshotPro – Best Overall

HeadshotPro delivered high-quality, polished headshots that could pass as professionally taken. The lighting, sharpness, and natural skin tones made these headshots stand out. The customization options were strong, and the backgrounds looked seamless rather than awkwardly edited.

Features

  • AI-Powered Headshot Generation: Uses advanced AI trained on professional headshots for realistic results.
  • Wide Range of Styles: Business, casual, and creative options available.
  • Customizable Backgrounds & Lighting: Personalize your image to match your brand.

Pricing

  • Basic Shoot: $29 – 40 headshots, 4 backgrounds, 3-hour turnaround
  • Professional Shoot: $39 – 100 headshots, 10 backgrounds, 2-hour turnaround
  • Executive Shoot: $59 – 200 headshots, 20 backgrounds, 1-hour turnaround
  • Team Packages: Starting at $39 per user

Pro's and Con's

✅ Professional-grade images
✅ High accuracy in facial rendering
✅ Wide range of background and outfit customization
❌ Slightly airbrushed look but totally acceptable for resumes, LinkedIn profiles, etc.

Results

2. Aragon – Solid Runner-Up

Aragon was a close second, generating realistic headshots with good facial detail. However, some of the images had minor inconsistencies in hair rendering—of the 10 images we uploaded, only one was a bit dated with an old hair color (blonde) vs. brunette. Interestingly, the AI generates more blonde photos than it did brunette.

Features

  • Realistic Headshots: Upload 6 photos and get 100 professional-quality images.
  • Cost-Effective: More affordable than traditional headshots.
  • Time-Saving: Get results in under an hour.

Pricing

  • Starter Package: $35 – 20 headshots, 5 outfits, 2-hour processing
  • Basic Package: $45 – 60 headshots, 20 outfits, 1-hour processing
  • Premium Package: $75 – 100 headshots, 40 outfits, 30-minute processing
  • Business Packages: $35 per user for team accounts

Pro’s and Con’s

✅ Realistic results
✅ Fast processing time
✅ Good balance of price and quality
❌ Occasional unnatural skin smoothing

Results

3. Canva – By Far the Worst

We love Canva. They've always been a go-to platform for making quick social media posts, designing ads, but when it comes to AI-generated headshots we were pretty bummed with the results.

Our headshot turned out to super "AI-y". The result was inconsistent with the original image we uploaded. Overall, the headshots often looked like a super old AI model, lacking any realism. Guess this was a case of 'you get what you pay for'. So while the ai headshot generator was included in our base plan, we were only limited to one output option, and it wasn't something we could use for a professional profile.

Pro’s and Con’s

✅ Free (if you don’t mind looking like a cartoon)
❌ Unreliable facial rendering
❌ Overly stylized, unnatural edits
❌ Lack of customization

Results

Final Verdict: Stick with AI (But Choose Wisely)

If you’re serious about getting high-quality AI-generated headshots, HeadshotPro is the clear winner, with Aragon being a respectable alternative. Canva? Not even in the race. But if you want something even better? Bettershot offers the most advanced AI headshots—realistic, professional, and fully customizable. The Ultimate Headshot Guide: Types, Costs, What to Wear, and Where to Get Them

Master the art of headshots with our ultimate guide. Explore types, costs, poses, lighting techniques, and expert tips to create a professional photo that elevates your personal brand.

The Ultimate Headshot Guide: Types, Costs, Poses, Lighting, and Tips for Every Need

Whether it’s on LinkedIn, a company website, the Gmail icon of someone you’re emailing, or the image staring back at you during a Zoom call when the camera’s off, your headshot communicates so much about you—without saying a single word.

This guide dives deep into everything you need to know about headshots, covering their types, costs, poses, lighting, and even the specific needs of different industries.

But first, why do headshots matter?

Malcolm Gladwell’s work in the New York Times best selling book, Blink, highlights the power of a glance—how, in just two seconds, we can make remarkably sound judgments about people and situations.

The first impression of a headshot helps shape that perception, and informs how someone may perceive you interpersonally.

Plus, research shows that profiles with professional headshots receive significantly more engagement on LinkedIn, casting websites, and other platforms. A great headshot can:

  • Establish trust and professionalism
  • Highlight your personality and uniqueness
  • Set you apart from competitors in your field
  • Align your image with your brand’s or industry’s expectations

Types of Headshots

Different industries and purposes require unique styles of headshots.

Corporate Headshots

  • Use: LinkedIn profiles, company websites, press releases
  • Style: Clean, professional, and approachable
  • Tip: Neutral backgrounds (e.g., white, grey, or office settings) work best. Wear attire that reflects your role to capture a high-quality professional photo.

Corporate Headshot Examples 👇

Student Headshots

  • Use: Career fairs, resumes, LinkedIn profiles
  • Style: Youthful yet professional
  • Tip: Choose settings and outfits that reflect the industries you’re targeting

Military/Veteran Headshots

  • Use: Formal records, personal keepsakes, civilian career transitions
  • Style: Strong, confident, and formal
  • Tip: Uniforms and medals can be included for a classic look

Military and Veteran Headshot Examples 👇

ERAS Headshots

  • Use: Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) submissions by medical students applying for residency programs
  • Style: Professional, standardized, and polished
  • Tip: Ensure proper lighting and a clean, neutral background for a formal and consistent look

Actor Headshots

  • Use: Casting calls, audition submissions
  • Style: Expressive and versatile, showcasing range and personality
  • Tip: Opt for neutral clothing and minimal makeup to let casting directors focus on your features

Modeling Headshots

  • Use: Portfolios, agency submissions
  • Style: High-fashion or natural, depending on the modeling niche
  • Tip: Highlight facial features with simple poses and great lighting

The Cost of Headshots

Professional headshot pricing can vary greatly depending on location, photographer experience, session length, and included services. Here's what to expect:

Budget Options ($100-$250)

  • Pros: Affordable for students and entry-level professionals
  • Cons: May offer limited retouching and fewer outfit changes
  • Use Case: Basic LinkedIn or student headshot photos

Mid-Range Options ($250-$500)

  • Pros: Professional photographers with better equipment and editing services
  • Cons: Limited studio or outdoor location options
  • Use Case: Corporate professionals, actors, and teachers

High-End Options ($500-$1500+)

  • Pros: Extensive retouching, multiple locations, and experienced photographers

Perfecting Poses for Your Headshot

The right pose can make or break your headshot. Here are some essential tips:

  • Corporate/LinkedIn: Face the camera directly with a slight tilt. A gentle smile conveys confidence and approachability
  • Actors/Models: Experiment with angles, intense gazes, and relaxed poses to showcase versatility and align with your personal brand
  • Academic/Teachers: Opt for a relaxed pose with open body language to exude warmth
  • General Tips: Before stepping in front of the camera, take a moment to relax. Try a quick breathing exercise—inhale deeply, hold for a few seconds, then exhale slowly—to release tension and feel more grounded. When you’re ready for your shot:

What to Wear

  • Solid colors work best; avoid busy patterns
  • Match your attire to your industry (e.g., business suit for finance, smart casual for tech)
  • A collared shirt or tailored blouse is always a great option, providing a polished and professional look
  • Accessories should be minimal and non-distracting
  • Dressing as you would for a job interview can enhance the professionalism of your headshot

Choosing the Right Photographer

Here's just two things to consider when choosing a professional photographer:

  • Check out their portfolio to suss out if they're someone you'd want to photograph you
  • Always, always, always, read their reviews

AI Headshots for Realtors: A Modern Solution

Discover how AI headshots provide realtors with a fast, affordable solution for professional photos. Save time, reduce costs, and skip the stress of traditional photoshoots while enhancing your professional image.

AI Headshots for Realtors: A Modern Solution

Your headshot matters in real estate. Before a client reaches out, they’ve likely already seen your photo—on Zillow listings, your website, branding and marketing materials, or social media. That photo is doing a lot of the work. It introduces you, sets the tone, and shapes how professional and approachable you appear.

But let’s be honest. Scheduling a professional photoshoot takes time. Picking multiple outfits, choosing locations, coordinating schedules—it’s not always practical when you’re busy juggling listings, open houses, and client calls.

AI headshots offer a faster, simpler alternative for busy real estate professionals. With a few uploaded photos, these tools can create polished, professional images in a fraction of the time. If you’ve been putting off updating your headshot, AI might be the solution you didn’t know you needed.

Why Realtors Need a Great Headshot and How AI Can Help

A strong headshot does more than make you look good—it builds trust. For realtors, a professional photo signals that you’re current, detail-oriented, and someone clients can rely on. In a competitive market, where first impressions often happen online, your headshot is a vital part of your personal brand.

If your photo is outdated or low-quality, it can send the wrong message. An updated, polished image not only shows attention to detail but also enhances your credibility. And in real estate, where every detail matters, this can make all the difference.

AI tools offer a modern, efficient way to refresh your headshot. By uploading a few clear photos—head-on with good lighting—you can generate professional images in minutes. These tools allow you to customize key elements, such as backgrounds, outfits, or lighting, ensuring the final result aligns perfectly with your brand.

Unlike traditional shoots, you can make adjustments digitally. Want a different background? A new outfit? Tweaked lighting? You can refine these details until the image fits your brand perfectly.

Here’s what makes AI headshots worth considering:

  • Quick Results: Get new photos in hours instead of waiting days.
  • Zero Hassle: No booking photographers, no travel to studio shoots.
  • Budget-Friendly: AI tools often cost less than traditional photography.
  • Options to Customize: Try different backgrounds or styles without starting from scratch.

While AI doesn’t replace the creative eye of a professional photographer, it’s a convenient option when you need something professional—and fast.

AI vs. Traditional Headshots

Both AI tools and professional photography have their place, but which one makes sense for you?

Flexibility Customizable with AI tools Photographer-driven adjustments

If you’re looking for a quick, affordable way to refresh your professional image, AI headshots get the job done. If you want something with a more personal touch and the hands-on guidance of a photographer, a traditional photoshoot might still be the way to go.

Tips for a Professional Headshot

Whether you’re using AI or booking a photographer, here are a few ways to make sure your photo works for you:

  1. Dress the Part: Stick with clean, well-fitted clothing in neutral or solid colors.
  2. Keep It Simple: Backgrounds should be uncluttered so the focus stays on you.
  3. Show Confidence: A natural, relaxed expression helps build trust.
  4. Stay Current: If your headshot feels outdated, it’s time for a refresh.

AI tools make testing these details easy. You can experiment with different looks until you find the one that fits your style best.

Is AI the Right Choice for You?

AI headshots offer a practical solution for real estate professionals. They’re quick, flexible, and surprisingly polished. If time and budget have been holding you back, this might be the perfect chance to upgrade your professional image.

That said, if you prefer working closely with a photographer to get everything just right, traditional shoots still offer plenty of value. It comes down to what works best for your needs.

Either way, your headshot matters. It’s part of your brand, and it’s one of the first things clients see. A professional, confident image will always help you stand out in the real estate market and leave the right impression.
